Curaçao sits 40 miles off the Venezuelan coast, outside the Caribbean hurricane belt, with consistent weather year-round and water clarity that puts most Caribbean islands to shame. Willemstad is legitimately one of the most beautiful small cities in the hemisphere — Dutch colonial buildings in candy colors facing a natural harbor that was one of the busiest in the 17th-century slave trade, now a UNESCO site with outdoor bars along the waterfront. The diving is world-class, with 65+ sites accessible from shore or short boat trips.

Puerto Plata sits on the Dominican Republic’s Amber Coast — the north-facing Atlantic side that most people skip because they book Punta Cana first. That is their loss. Located in Oaxaca state, south of Puerto Escondido, this was Mexico’s last planned resort zone — federally protected, with strict rules keeping 70% of the land undeveloped. The result is nine bays and 36 beaches, mostly empty, with water so clear you can see the reef from the boat before you anchor.

Twin towns — Ixtapa’s polished hotel zone beach and Zihuatanejo’s working fishing village feel — sitting 10 minutes apart, sharing some of the best sport fishing on Mexico’s coast and calm Pacific water that actually lets you swim. Mazatlán is what a Mexican beach city looked like before the international resort developers showed up. The historic center is a legitimate colonial-era city with one of the largest Spanish-language carnivals outside Brazil, a cathedral that took 75 years to complete, and a Malecón that runs 21 kilometers along the Pacific — the longest in the world. The fishing fleet is still working, the shrimp is still fresh, and the price of dinner in the Centro is a fraction of what you will pay anywhere on the Cancún Hotel Zone strip.

Puerto Vallarta works differently from Cancún or Cabo. The old town — Zona Romántica — is a functioning neighborhood with cobblestone streets, local restaurants, art galleries, and a Sunday craft market that runs year-round. The Malecón boardwalk along the bay connects the Hotel Zone to the old town with bronze sculptures every half-block. Banderas Bay itself is one of the best year-round whale watching spots in the Pacific, with humpbacks December through March and blue whales occasionally sighted in the deeper water offshore.
