What to Do in Puerto Vallarta

Four free days in Puerto Vallarta is not enough. The Malecón boardwalk runs the length of the Hotel Zone into the old town — sculptures, street performers, open-air bars. Marietas Islands Hidden Beach requires a permit (book weeks in advance), a boat trip, and a swim through a rock tunnel to reach a beach inside a collapsed volcanic dome — one of the genuinely rare experiences in Mexico. Zona Romántica is the neighborhood south of the Cuale River — better restaurants, lower prices, more local feel than the Hotel Zone. Banderas Bay whale watching is December through March for humpbacks. Sayulita is an hour north on the Riviera Nayarit — a surf town with a hippie market, good tacos, and consistent beginner waves.
