El Arco & Land's End
The natural rock arch at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. The single icon of Cabo San Lucas. Visible from most Sandos Finisterra ocean-facing rooms; reachable by 15-minute glass-bottom boat from the marina.
The rock arch at the tip of the Baja Peninsula
El Arco — also called Land’s End or El Arco de Cabo San Lucas — is the natural rock arch at the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. It’s the symbol that appears on every Cabo postcard, every t-shirt, and every Instagram post tagged with the city. It is also genuinely one of the most photographed natural formations in Mexico, and seeing it up close is the first thing most Cabo visitors do.
The arch sits at the absolute end of the peninsula. From the marina in Cabo San Lucas, it’s a 15-minute boat ride. You can see it from many resort beaches, including the Sandos Finisterra Cabo San Lucas — the resort sits directly on the cliff above Land’s End and the arch is visible from most ocean-facing rooms.
The two oceans
What makes Land’s End geographically interesting (beyond the photo) is that the arch is the dividing line between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. On the Pacific side (west) the water is rougher, the surf is bigger, and the temperature is several degrees cooler — there’s a beach called Divorce Beach here that’s officially closed to swimmers because of the riptides. On the Sea of Cortez side (east) the water is calm, warm, and clear — there’s a small protected beach called Lover’s Beach that’s only accessible by boat.
You can stand at Lover’s Beach, walk 80 meters across the spit of sand, and be staring at completely different ocean conditions. It’s the only place on the North American continent where two oceans meet at a clearly defined point.
How to see El Arco
There are five practical ways:
Glass-bottom boat ($15-25 round trip). The cheapest and most popular option. Boats leave from the Cabo San Lucas Marina every 15-20 minutes from 8 AM to 5 PM. The trip is about 90 minutes total — out to the arch, around to Pelicans Rock for the sea lion colony, drop-off at Lover’s Beach with optional pickup at a scheduled return time, and back to the marina. The glass bottom shows you the reef under the boat — colorful but not Caribbean-clear.
Water taxi ($10 one-way). Smaller pangas that just shuttle you to Lover’s Beach and back at a specified time. No glass bottom, faster, more local. Same departure point at the marina.
Sunset cruise ($60-90). Two-hour evening sail with snacks and open bar — passes the arch at sunset. The most popular date-night option. Multiple operators run these.
Snorkel tour ($55-75). 4-hour combo trip that includes the arch, Lover’s Beach, and a snorkel stop at Pelicans Rock or Santa María Bay. Best value if you want to actually swim and snorkel.
Kayak or paddleboard ($25-50/hour). Self-paddle from Medano Beach. Doable at flat-water times (early morning) but can be challenging if there’s chop. Not recommended for beginners.
Pelicans Rock & the sea lion colony
Most boat trips include a pass by Pelicans Rock — a smaller rock formation 200 meters from the arch with a permanent colony of California sea lions. They’re loud, they smell, and they’re a guaranteed photo. The rock also has a small reef at its base that’s the most popular snorkel spot accessible from a marina-departing boat.
Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor)
The small (200-meter) beach on the Sea of Cortez side of the arch, accessible only by boat. White sand, calm water, no facilities, no shade. Bring water and sunscreen. Most boat operators drop you off and pick you up at a scheduled time — typical drop is 60-90 minutes.
The beach has limited capacity in high season; some afternoons it’s wall-to-wall with tour groups. Morning visits (8-10 AM) are quieter; the tour buses don’t really hit the marina until 10 AM.
How to get to the marina from your resort
The Cabo San Lucas Marina is in the heart of downtown Cabo, where every Land’s End boat departs.
- From Sandos Finisterra Cabo San Lucas: 10 minutes walk down the hill, or 5 minutes by golf cart shuttle. The resort is the closest property to the marina.
- From corridor resorts (Costa Azul / San José del Cabo end): 25-40 minutes by car
- From Medano Beach hotels: 5-10 minutes walk along the beach
The marina is also the cruise ship tender point and the launching point for sport fishing, sunset cruises, and most water tours.
Time the photo for golden hour
The El Arco photo every visitor wants — the arch silhouetted against orange sky — only works in the 30 minutes before sunset, and only from the Pacific side. Sunset cruises are timed exactly for this. Glass-bottom boats and water taxis run during the day and won't get you that shot. If the iconic photo is the goal, book a sunset cruise; if you want time on Lover's Beach itself, book the morning glass-bottom boat.
