La Paz Day Trip from Cabo
The capital of Baja California Sur, 2.5 hours north of Cabo on the Sea of Cortez. The reason to go: Espíritu Santo Island and the resident California sea lion colony where you can snorkel with the animals in shallow protected coves. The headline marine experience of southern Baja.
The capital of Baja California Sur — and a different Mexico
La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and the largest city on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula — about 250,000 residents, a working harbor city with a long Mexican-naval history and a culture that’s distinctly less tourist-shaped than Cabo. It’s 2.5 hours north of Cabo San Lucas by car, sitting on the inland Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula. For Cabo visitors, La Paz is the day trip — or weekend trip — for a different version of southern Baja.
The reason most Cabo visitors go to La Paz: Espíritu Santo Island and the swim-with-sea-lions experience. The island sits in the Sea of Cortez 25 km from La Paz with one of the most accessible sea lion colonies in Mexico — boats from La Paz let you snorkel with the colony in shallow protected coves. It’s the headline attraction of any La Paz day trip.
What’s actually in La Paz
The Malecón. The 5-km waterfront promenade with public sculptures, palm-shaded benches, sunset views, and casual dining. The single best thing to walk in La Paz, especially in the late afternoon when the sea breeze comes up. Multiple iconic sculptures along the route — including the famous “El Faro” lighthouse mermaid, the diving girl, and a humpback whale tail.
The plaza and historic center. Plaza de la Constitución, the colonial-era main square, with the Cathedral of Our Lady of La Paz and a small but worthwhile Anthropological Museum (Museo de Antropología) showing Pre-Columbian Baja artifacts.
Restaurants. La Paz has the strongest food scene in southern Baja outside of San José del Cabo’s culinary corridor. Notable spots: Tatanka Baja Fish & Steakhouse (modern Mexican-fusion, dinner), Las Tres Vírgenes (mid-range Mexican, regional Baja specialties, best mole in the area), Café Exquisito (breakfast, casual), Sushi La Paz (fusion, popular with locals).
Shopping. Mexican craft markets, handmade silver, local artisans. Less commercialized than Cabo. The Mercado Bravo is the local food market — stalls of produce, seafood, and prepared food, mostly local clientele.
Beaches. La Paz proper has the calm-water beach Playa Balandra (40 minutes north of the city), often called one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico. Also Playa El Tecolote (popular weekend beach), and Playa Pichilingue (closer to the city, has a beach club). Balandra is the headline beach and worth a separate visit if you have a full day.
Espíritu Santo Island & the sea lions
Espíritu Santo is a 30 km² uninhabited island 25 km north of La Paz, protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Mexican National Park. The island has nine major beaches and several smaller ones — most are uninhabited and only reachable by boat. The headline attraction is the resident colony of California sea lions at the northern end (Los Islotes), where you can snorkel with the animals in shallow protected coves.
A typical Espíritu Santo day trip is 8-10 hours total:
- Pickup at your La Paz hotel at 7:30 AM
- Boat departs the La Paz marina around 8:30 AM
- 90-minute boat ride to the island, with whale-watching opportunities seasonal (Dec-Apr)
- Stop at Los Islotes for the sea lion snorkel, 60-90 minutes in-water
- Lunch on a remote beach on the island, 60-90 minutes
- Snorkel stop at one of the island reefs
- Return to La Paz around 4:30 PM
The sea lion encounter is the experience. The colony is habituated to boats — calves are curious and will swim within a few feet of snorkelers. Adults stay on the rocks unless agitated. The interaction is regulated; tour operators are required to maintain group sizes and time limits.
Doing it as a day trip from Cabo (or staying overnight)
A La Paz day trip from Cabo is technically possible but very long. Drive: 2.5 hours each way. Most operators that sell “La Paz day trip from Cabo” actually deliver a 14-15 hour day. Doable; not relaxing.
Better: Stay overnight in La Paz. One night in a downtown La Paz hotel (the Costa Baja Resort or El Ángel Azul are the well-rated options), Espíritu Santo on day 1, return to Cabo on day 2. Or expand to a 2-night trip with Playa Balandra on day 2 and the drive back on day 3.
Best for travelers: This is the trip if you want to see a Mexico that hasn’t been completely shaped by Cabo’s tourist economy. Worth the effort if your trip is longer than 7 nights.
How to do the day
Standard La Paz + Espíritu Santo combo tour ($180-250/person): Pickup from a Cabo hotel at 6:30 AM, bus to La Paz, boat to Espíritu Santo, sea lion snorkel, lunch, return drive, drop-off at Cabo by 8 PM. Long day but covers the headline attractions.
Self-drive overnight ($300-500 total): Rent a car, drive yourself, book a La Paz hotel, do Espíritu Santo on day 1, beach day on day 2, drive back on day 3. Most flexible, most rewarding if you have the days.
Charter flight option ($600-1,200 total): Calafia Airlines and a few private operators run small-plane day trips from Los Cabos to La Paz — 25-minute flight each way replaces the 2.5-hour drive. Pricey but eliminates the long driving day.
What to bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, polarized sunglasses. Long day in open sun.
- Underwater camera or GoPro. Sea lion encounter is photogenic.
- Layers. Mornings on the boat are cool; afternoons are hot.
- Cash for tips and beach vendors.
- Dramamine if you get seasick. Open Sea of Cortez can have 3-5 foot swells.
How to get there from your resort
- From Sandos Finisterra Cabo San Lucas: 2.5 hours north on Highway 19 (via Todos Santos) or Highway 1 (via the airport corridor). Highway 19 is the more scenic route; both arrive at La Paz in roughly the same time.
- By tour: Most pickup is at the resort lobby
- By air (Calafia Airlines): 25 minutes flight from SJD airport to La Paz airport
Stay overnight if you can
The Cabo-La Paz day trip is technically possible but it's a 14-hour day with 5 hours of driving — and the most beautiful part of the trip (Playa Balandra, the Malecón at sunset, breakfast in the historic center) all gets cut. If your Cabo trip is 7+ nights, peel off a 1- or 2-night La Paz overnight. Better hotels, better restaurants, and the version of Baja that hasn't been completely reshaped by Cabo's tourist economy. Worth the schedule juggle.
