Cancun Money Tips
Money in Cancun is easy when you plan the boring parts first: pesos for small purchases, cards for bigger resort spending, a backup payment method, and no rushed exchange decisions.
The simple setup
Bring a card that works internationally, a backup card kept separately, and enough pesos in smaller bills for tips, markets, buses, small food stops, and moments when cards are inconvenient.
Hotel Zone restaurants and resorts often take cards. Downtown markets, beach vendors, small shops, local transport, and tips are easier with cash.
Pesos vs dollars
Use pesos when possible. Dollars may be accepted in tourist areas, but the exchange rate may not favor you. If you pay in dollars, agree on the conversion before handing over money.
ATM and card habits
Use secure ATM locations, shield your PIN, keep receipts when useful, and check the conversion screen before accepting. Many travelers prefer withdrawing pesos from bank-linked ATMs rather than carrying too much cash from home.
Market and excursion money
For Mercado 28, food nights, local shops, and smaller excursions, small bills make life easier. Avoid putting every peso in one pocket or bag, especially on beach and nightlife days.
