Punta Sur Isla Mujeres
The south end of Isla Mujeres is the counterpoint to Playa Norte: exposed Caribbean views, limestone cliffs, public art, and a slower coastal walk with more texture than another beach-club stop.
Why Punta Sur deserves its own stop
Most first-time Isla Mujeres itineraries revolve around Playa Norte, lunch downtown, and a golf-cart loop. Punta Sur is what gives that loop a real destination. The coastline changes from calm north-end beach water to rock, cliffs, wind, and long open-sea views. It is where the island feels less like an extension of a Cancún beach day and more like its own place.
The municipal sculpture park is part of the draw. The municipality reports 21 sculptures in the current park, including newer works that connect modern art with Maya cultural themes. The area also carries the long-standing association with Ixchel, making this the cultural counterweight to a beach-first day.
How to fit it into a good island day
Go south before the hottest part of the afternoon if you are driving a golf cart. Give yourself time to walk, then return north for lunch or Playa Norte. If you only have a few hours on the island, choose either Punta Sur or a long beach day rather than rushing both.
Wear footwear that works on uneven ground, bring water, and use sun protection. Follow railings and marked paths. The shore is dramatic because it is exposed; do not climb barriers or step onto slippery rocks for a photo.
Iguanas are regularly seen around the area, but they are wildlife, not a photo prop. Keep distance, do not feed or touch them, and never block their path. The same applies to birds and any marine life seen from the shore.
Best pairing
Punta Sur pairs naturally with the Isla Mujeres Golf Cart Day and the Isla Mujeres Ferry Guide. Add Playa Norte only if your ferry schedule leaves enough time to enjoy both stops without turning the day into a race.
Source to confirm
Check current access, hours, and any maintenance notices before driving south. The Isla Mujeres municipal update on the sculpture park is the right starting point for the site’s current context.
