What Xcaret actually is

Xcaret (pronounced ish-ka-RET) is a private 200-acre eco-archaeological park between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It’s not a theme park in the Disney sense — there are no roller coasters, no costumed characters wandering around. It’s closer to a curated natural-and-cultural showcase: real cenotes you can swim in, real underground rivers that run through limestone caves, real Mayan ruins on the property, plus aquariums, aviaries, dolphin lagoons, and a daily evening show that’s genuinely spectacular.

The park has been running since 1990 and built its reputation on doing the eco-cultural thing well. It’s the flagship of a network — the Xcaret family also runs Xplor (zip-lines and ATV caves), Xel-Há (snorkel lagoon), and Xenses (sensory experiences). For most first-time Riviera Maya visitors, the original Xcaret is the right pick.

The big-ticket experiences

Underground rivers. Three swim-through rivers cut through limestone caves under the park — the Maya, the Manatee, and the Blue. You wear a life vest and floating mask, the water is cool, the ceilings are dramatic. Each takes 30–45 minutes. You don’t need to be a swimmer — you literally float.

Mexican Cemetery and Mayan Village. A reconstructed traditional Mayan village with artisans demonstrating crafts, a Day of the Dead-themed cemetery (very photogenic), and the Bridge to Paradise. Walk the cobblestone paths and watch tortillas being made on a comal.

Coral Reef Aquarium. A genuinely well-done aquarium with sea horses, octopus, sting rays, and the Caribbean reef ecosystem. Half-day on its own if you let yourself slow down.

Butterfly Pavilion. Walk-in netted aviary with thousands of native butterflies. Best in the morning when they’re most active.

Wild bird breeding aviary. Toucans, scarlet macaws, flamingos in semi-natural enclosures. Easy to spend an hour here.

Xcaret México Espectacular

The evening show is the thing that turns Xcaret from a good park into a great one. Roughly 300 performers, a full orchestra, traditional Mexican music, dance, and a narrative that walks through Mexican history from the pre-Hispanic Mayans through the Spanish conquest, independence, and the Mexican Revolution. It’s 90 minutes long, runs every evening (except Tuesdays in low season), and is included in your park admission.

If you’re only doing one Xcaret day, time it so you stay for the show. It starts around 7 PM. Eat the buffet dinner at 5:30, stake your seats early, and don’t leave the park before sunset.

Tickets and tiers

Xcaret has three pricing tiers that get confusing fast:

  • Xcaret Basic (~$120): park entry, evening show, snorkel gear rental
  • Xcaret Plus (~$180): adds buffet meals and locker
  • Xcaret Total (~$220): adds optional dolphin swim, sea trek, snuba — pick one extra activity

Most travelers find Xcaret Plus the right call — the meal alone is worth the difference, and lockers are essential since you’ll want to stash bags between river swims and dry activities.

Buy online in advance — same-day at the gate is usually 15–20% more expensive. Watch for resort-package deals; Sandos Playacar partners with Xcaret regularly and sometimes offers reduced rates.

How to get there

From Sandos Playacar (Playa del Carmen): 15 minutes south on Highway 307. Easiest day trip in the portfolio.

From Sandos Caracol (Riviera Maya): 25 minutes south. Also a great option.

From Sandos Cancún or Krystal Cancún: 75 minutes south. Doable but it’s a longer day. Xcaret runs a paid shuttle from Cancún hotels for around $25 round trip — book through the resort concierge.

A walkthrough of the park

Full park tour video — gives a real sense of scale, the underground river experience, and what the various sections look like. Good orientation if you're trying to decide if Xcaret is your kind of day.

Pacing tip

Xcaret is too big for one day if you try to do everything. Pick your priorities: rivers + cultural village + show is the most popular triangle. Or aquarium + butterfly pavilion + show if you want a slower pace. Or all three rivers + dolphin swim if you've upgraded to Xcaret Total. You will not see all 50 attractions in one visit — and that's fine.
