Beach Horseback Riding

Calm, well-trained horses, a guided 90-minute ride along the beach or through the countryside, and the option of a sunset finish on the sand. One of the most photographed and most underrated half-days you can do from Cofresí.

There's something about a horse on a beach at sunset that doesn't get old.

Horseback riding on Puerto Plata's north coast is one of those activities that consistently rates higher in guest reviews than its visibility suggests. Operators run small ranches and stables in the countryside between Sosúa and Cabarete (about 25 minutes from Cofresí), with herds of well-trained, calm horses suited to first-time riders. The ride circuits combine countryside paths through small villages and farmland with a stretch along a quiet beach — typically 60–90 minutes total in the saddle. Sunset rides are the highlight; daytime rides are usually shorter and earlier.

You don't need to know how to ride. The horses follow the lead guide's pace and stay in single file. Most of the ride is at walking pace; some operators allow brief trotting on the beach if everyone in the group is comfortable. Guides match the horse to the rider — first-timers and kids get the calmest animals, more confident riders get more responsive horses. Helmets are provided, sometimes optional but recommended for kids.

Morning vs sunset

Morning rides (8:30–10:30 AM) are cooler, quieter, and the beach is empty. Better for kids and for guests who want to be back at the resort before midday heat. Sunset rides (4:30–6:30 PM) are the marquee experience — golden hour light, a beach finish as the sun drops, and the photo opportunity most guests come back with. Sunset rides cost slightly more (typically $10–$20 extra) and book up faster. If you want the sunset slot, book it at the Cofresí tour desk on arrival, not mid-week.

Where you ride

Most operators run a circuit that combines a 30-minute countryside section (dirt paths, banana plantations, small Dominican villages) with a 30–45 minute beach section on a quieter stretch of north-coast sand — typically near Sabaneta or the western end of Cabarete. The beach portion is the highlight: waves on one side, palms on the other, and on a sunset ride, the western light turning everything gold.

Practical tips

Long pants protect your legs. Even on a beach ride, the saddle leather and stirrups can rub bare skin raw over 90 minutes. Light long pants or leggings work better than shorts.
Closed-toe shoes mandatory. Sneakers, hiking shoes, or proper riding boots. No sandals, no flip-flops, no heeled shoes (your foot can slip through the stirrup).
Wear the helmet. Optional in some operations, but always wear one — especially with kids. A horse can spook in a single second.
Sunscreen and a hat with a chin strap. The hat without a strap will fly off. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before mounting; the saddle reflects heat and the back of your hands and forearms get sun you wouldn't expect.
Tip the guide and groom. $5–$10 USD per rider for the lead guide, $1–$3 for the groom who handled your horse. Cash, in pesos or USD.
Sunset rides book up. If you're planning a Cabarete day or Monkey Jungle morning, schedule the sunset horseback ride for that same evening. Both can be done in one day with a beach lunch in between.
