Cofresí Beach Map: Where It Is and How to Get There

Cofresí Beach is one of those places that's much closer to everything than the map suggests.

It sits in a small protected bay on the Dominican Republic's north coast, roughly 12 road miles west of the city of Puerto Plata and 3 road miles west of the Amber Cove cruise port. The bay opens north onto the Caribbean Sea. Mount Isabel de Torres rises behind the coastline a few miles inland — the same mountain with the cable car at its peak. The geography that made this a useful anchorage for nineteenth-century smugglers (protected water, reef offshore, easy reach to open sea) is the same geography that makes it a comfortable swim beach today.

<p>If you're plugging coordinates into a GPS or rideshare app: <strong>19.7984° N, 70.7521° W</strong>. The address most resort transfers use is "Cofresí, Puerto Plata 57000, Dominican Republic." On Google Maps, search "Cofresí Palm Beach Resort" — that's the anchor pin most drivers know, and the beach is the strand directly in front of it.</p>
<p>The two-resort complex (Cofresí Palm Beach &amp; Spa and The Tropical at Lifestyle Holidays) occupies most of the bay's beachfront. Public access exists at the edges of the resort grounds; the developed central stretch is private to resort guests.</p>

<h2 class="tt-h2">Drive times from the places you'll actually arrive from</h2>
<p><strong>From Puerto Plata Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP):</strong> 12 miles, 20–30 minutes by road depending on traffic through the eastern outskirts of Puerto Plata city. This is the standard arrival — most direct flights from East Coast U.S. and Canada land at POP. Resort transfers and pre-arranged private cars run roughly $60–$85 round trip for the pair of you.</p>
<p><strong>From Amber Cove cruise port:</strong> 3 miles, 10–15 minutes. Amber Cove is the Carnival-owned cruise port for the Puerto Plata region and the closest deep-water dock to Cofresí Beach. Taxis from Amber Cove run roughly $20–$30 each way — cheap day-trip access if you're on a Caribbean cruise itinerary and want a real beach day at a real resort.</p>
<p><strong>From downtown Puerto Plata (Centro Histórico):</strong> 8 miles, 15–20 minutes through the Maimón coastal road. Pleasant drive — keep an eye out for Mount Isabel de Torres rising on your left and the Caribbean opening up on your right.</p>
<p><strong>From Santiago (STI) airport:</strong> 60 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes via the Autopista Duarte. STI is the backup airport — usually only worth using if POP doesn't have a flight from your origin city.</p>
<p><strong>From Sosúa Beach:</strong> 20 miles, 35–45 minutes. Sosúa is east of Puerto Plata; the drive goes through the city.</p>
<p><strong>From Cabarete:</strong> 25 miles, 45–55 minutes. Cabarete is past Sosúa, even farther east.</p>
<p><strong>From Santo Domingo (SDQ) airport:</strong> 145 miles, 4 hours 30 minutes minimum. <em>Do not book SDQ if you're staying at Cofresí.</em> It's on the other side of the country.</p>
<p><strong>From Punta Cana (PUJ) airport:</strong> 230 miles, 6+ hours. Same warning — different coast entirely.</p>

<h2 class="tt-h2">The layout of the bay</h2>
<p>The Cofresí bay is small — about 1.5 miles of beach in a gentle curve. The resort complex sits in the middle. To the west, the land rises into low hills and you'll find scattered private homes and small fishing villages. To the east, the coast continues toward Amber Cove and the cruise port infrastructure. The reef offshore breaks the heavier Atlantic swell before it reaches the beach, which is why the water inside the bay stays calm and swimmable most of the year.</p>
<p>The beach itself runs roughly northwest-to-southeast. Sunrise lands behind the eastern hills (you don't see it directly on the beach). Sunset is the show — the sun drops into the Caribbean to the west and lights up the entire bay in pink and orange for about twenty minutes most evenings.</p>

<h2 class="tt-h2">Getting around once you're there</h2>
<p>Most resort guests don't need to drive. Ocean World is 10 minutes away with a taxi running $15–$20 each way. The 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua are 45 minutes south of the bay. Cabarete is an hour east for kitesurfing and beach bars. Mount Isabel de Torres (the cable car) is 20 minutes inland. Resort tour desks book all the standard excursions and include transport.</p>
<p>If you want to rent a car, the Puerto Plata airport has the usual rental agencies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar) and you can pick one up at arrival and drop it back at departure. Driving on the north coast is straightforward — main roads are well-maintained, signage is decent, and Google Maps works. Drive defensively in towns; motorcycles weave heavily.</p>
