If you're staying at the Cofresí resort, you're already here.

Cofresí Beach is the curving golden-sand bay that wraps around the western side of Puerto Plata's coast, immediately outside the Lifestyle Holidays resort complex. It's a real working beach — meaning it's not artificially manicured like some all-inclusive private strands. The sand is a soft golden tan, the water is turquoise and consistently calm thanks to the protection of the bay's curve, and a small reef offshore breaks the bigger Atlantic swells before they reach the shoreline.

Most resort guests never leave it. There's no need. Beach loungers stretch the length of the bay, the resort's beachfront restaurants extend out onto the sand, and a handful of independent local spots sit just past the resort gates if you want to walk down for a different vibe.

When to be on the beach

Mornings (7–10 AM) are the quietest stretch. The water is glassiest at sunrise, the sand is empty, and you can swim laps along the shore without seeing another person. Midday (11 AM–3 PM) the beach fills up with resort guests and the bar service starts. Late afternoon (4–6 PM) the light goes golden and the temperature eases off — best stretch for a long walk or a beach run. Sunset (around 6:30 PM) is the highlight: the bay faces west, so the sun drops directly into the water in front of you. Resort restaurants put out beachfront tables for this hour. Don't miss it.

What's in walking distance

Beyond the resort's own restaurants and bars, you can walk five minutes east to a row of independent local spots — fresh fish, ceviche, ice-cold Presidente beers at half resort prices. Walk five minutes west and you're at the entrance to Ocean World Adventure Park. The whole bay is walkable in 30 minutes if you do the full crescent at low tide. Don't expect public transit or beach taxis along Cofresí — it's residential beyond the resort gates.

Beach tips for your stay

Bring reef-safe sunscreen. The reef offshore is healthy and sees daily snorkeling — keep it that way.
Cash for off-resort spots. Walk five minutes past the gates and prices drop sharply. Bring small bills in pesos.
Watch the afternoon sun. The west-facing bay means full afternoon sun on the beach. Loungers under palms or umbrellas fill up by 11 AM.
Sunset is non-negotiable. Be on the sand by 6:00 PM. The bay's geometry makes Cofresí one of the few resort beaches where the sun drops directly into the water in front of you.
Snorkel near the rocks. The small rocky outcropping at the south end of the bay holds the best fish life. Calm-water-only swim — easy from shore.
Watch your stuff. Resort beach is patrolled. Public stretches past the gates are not — don't leave phones, wallets, or jewelry unattended on the sand.
