Puerto Plata Excursions: The 12 That Are Actually Worth Doing

Puerto Plata is genuinely one of the most excursion-rich destinations in the Caribbean — and that's also why guests get overwhelmed.

The region around Cofresí Beach has a Caribbean coast, a mountain range, colonial-era history, a rum heritage, dolphin and waterfall adventures, and a 30-minute drive to one of the most active beach towns in the DR. The downside: every resort tour desk and every street-corner operator pushes 40+ different "must-do" excursions, and figuring out which ones are actually worth a half-day of your trip is harder than it should be.

Here's a curated short list, organized by what kind of trip you want.

<h2 class="tt-h2">If you only do one: 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua</h2>
<p>This is Puerto Plata's signature excursion and the one to choose if you only do one. Jump and slide down 27 natural limestone waterfalls cut into a canyon about 45 minutes south of Cofresí. <p><strong>Street-corner "VIP catamaran" sellers in Puerto Plata.</strong> The legitimate operators book through the resort or through Amber Cove's tour shed. Beach hustlers offering 50% off the resort rate are sometimes legit and sometimes a different boat than the one you signed up for. Pay the resort rate; it's worth the predictability.</p>
<p><strong>Vague "city tours" without a specific itinerary.</strong> Ask what's actually included before you book. A real Centro Histórico + Amber Museum + Fortaleza tour is great; a 4-hour van drive through random parts of Puerto Plata is not.</p>
<p><strong>"Authentic Dominican village" tours.</strong> These are almost always staged. If you want a real local experience, eat at a roadside chimichurri (street BBQ) stop, drink at a colmado (corner store), and skip the curated village.</p>
