If you want to snorkel, this is your beach.

Sosúa Bay is a textbook Caribbean snorkel beach. The geography does the work — a horseshoe-shaped bay with a coral reef sitting roughly 100 yards offshore, breaking the bigger Atlantic swells before they reach the sand. The result is calm, glass-clear water with visibility that runs 30–50 feet on a typical day, plus a healthy reef ecosystem you can swim out to directly from the beach. No boat needed. Just rent a mask and fins, walk in, and start finding fish.

The beach itself is about half a mile of soft white-gold sand, lined with palms and a long row of beachfront restaurants, bars, and small shops. It's the busiest local beach in Puerto Plata — meaning more vendors and music than Cofresí, but also more food options, more rentable beach loungers, and a real local atmosphere. Locals use it as much as visitors.

Where to actually snorkel

The reef structure runs along both ends of the bay. The 3 Rocks reef — the small rocky outcropping near the eastern end — is the easiest entry point and the best for first-timers, with calm water and reliable fish life around the rocks. The western reef is bigger but requires a longer swim and stronger fitness. If you don't want to swim out on your own, several local operators run snorkel boat trips from the bay for $15–$25 per person, which include gear, a guide, and a stop at a deeper reef you can't reach from shore.

When to go

Mornings before 11 AM. The water is calmest, visibility peaks before midday wind kicks up, and the beach hasn't filled in yet. By early afternoon Sosúa gets busy — vendors, music, families, and a real beach-day vibe. Late afternoon thins out again. Sunset on Sosúa is decent but not the highlight here — Cofresí's west-facing bay has the better sunset. Come to Sosúa for the water, stay for an early dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants, and head back to Cofresí for sunset.

Practical tips

Mornings are best. Calmer water, peak visibility, fewer crowds. Aim to be in the bay by 9–10 AM.
Snorkel rentals on the beach. Mask + fins runs about $5–$10 USD for the day. Bring small cash.
Reef-safe sunscreen only. The reef is healthy and visited heavily — keep it that way. Apply before getting in the water.
Watch your stuff at the lounger. The beach is busy and patrolled but vendors come and go. Don't leave phones, wallets, or jewelry unattended.
Eat at the beachfront strip. Fresh fish, ceviche, garlic shrimp, cold beers right on the sand. Prices are moderate — typically $8–$15 USD per plate.
Pair with Cabarete. Sosúa and Cabarete are 10 minutes apart — easy to do Sosúa morning + Cabarete afternoon as one full beach day.
