Yásica River Tubing
Float down a calm jungle river on an inflatable tube, surrounded by dense tropical forest, birds, and the sound of running water. Locally known as Río Sonador. Easy half-day, all ages, no swimming skills required — just sit in the tube and drift.
If you want a jungle day without ziplines or hiking, this is it.
The Yásica River — locals call the upper section Río Sonador, which translates to "the dreamer" — is a slow, clear, jungle-fed river that runs from springs in the mountains south of Puerto Plata down to the Atlantic. The middle section, near the village of Yásica Arriba, is the standard tubing run: about 90 minutes of calm float through dense rainforest, with maybe a few small riffles but nothing technical, and pools deep enough for swimming if you want to get out of the tube. Total experience including transfers: 2–3 hours.
The water is genuinely clear — fed by mountain springs and shaded by jungle canopy, it runs cold and clean even in mid-summer. The forest along the banks is alive: tropical birds, the occasional iguana sunning on a rock, butterflies, and the constant background hum of insects you don't get on the beach. It's a different Caribbean experience from the typical resort day, and remarkably underrated for how close it is to Cofresí.
What the day looks like
Pickup at Cofresí between 8:30 and 9:30 AM. 30-minute drive south through the countryside to Yásica Arriba. Brief at the launch point, life vests and tubes provided, and a guide gets you started. The float run is about 90 minutes — entirely passive, you just sit in the tube and the current does the work. The guide stays with the group, helps anyone who runs aground, and points out wildlife. End point at a riverside village with a small restaurant for a Dominican lunch (rice, beans, grilled chicken or fish), then transfer back to the resort. Back at Cofresí by 1:30 PM.
When to go
Late morning — between 10 AM and noon. The water is warm enough to swim by then, the sun is high enough to penetrate the jungle canopy, and the wildlife is most active in mid-morning. Avoid late afternoon (frequent jungle rain showers, sometimes brief but cold). The trip operates year-round; summer (June–September) means slightly warmer water, more wildlife activity, and more frequent afternoon rain. Winter (December–March) means cooler water but clearer skies and fewer mosquitoes.
