Why jerk is not optional in Montego Bay
You can do a Jamaica week on resort buffets alone. You will have a fine time. You will also miss the smell that defines this island’s food culture: pimento smoke, scotch bonnet heat, meat cooked low over wood. Scotchies (and other serious pits around MoBay) are how visitors join that story without needing a private chef introduction.
How to order without looking lost
- Start with jerk chicken — the calibration protein.
- Add a starch: festival, bread, or the day’s sides.
- Decide heat tolerance before sauce goes wild.
- Share plates if your group is large; portions can be generous.
- Eat with your hands when that is the local practical mode; napkins are your friend.
Timing
Go for a late lunch when you are hungry, not as a rushed “five-minute culture stop” between waterfall selfies. Smoke + heat + travel is a meal, not a prop.
If you have a specialty dining reservation at Breathless or Secrets that night, keep lunch reasonable — this is not the moment for three proteins “for the table” unless that is the whole plan.
Logistics
Taxi both ways from the strip/resort corridor. Confirm open hours. Expect a casual open-air setting, not white tablecloth. Keep valuables simple.
