Swimming with dolphins at Cap Cana

Dolphin Discovery operates the largest dolphin facility in Punta Cana — a marine mammal park inside the Cap Cana coastal zone with eight programs covering interactions ranging from beginner (“touch the dolphin from a platform”) to advanced (“dorsal-fin tow across the lagoon”). Capacity for up to 12 dolphins per session, on-site veterinary staff, and accreditation through the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums.

If you’re going to do a swim-with-dolphins program in Punta Cana, this is the operator. There’s no second comparable facility in the corridor.

The programs (entry-level to advanced)

Dolphin Encounter (entry-level, $89-119). The simplest program — you stand waist-deep on a submerged platform with one or two dolphins, the trainer narrates the dolphin’s behaviors, and you’ll touch the dolphin, “shake hands” with the pectoral fin, and get a kiss on the cheek. 30-40 minutes total program, 20-25 minutes in-water with the dolphin. Suitable for kids 5+ and non-swimmers (you stand on the platform, not free-swimming).

Dolphin Swim Adventure ($129-159). Mid-range program — you free-swim with the dolphins in deeper water, performing a guided “boogie push” where the dolphin pushes you across the lagoon by your foot, plus the standard touch/kiss/handshake interactions. About 45 minutes total, 30 minutes in-water. Minimum age 6, swimmers only.

Royal Swim ($179-219). The full program — includes the boogie push plus the dorsal-fin tow (dolphins pull you across the lagoon at speed by their dorsal fins), free-swim time, and the foot-push trick. 60 minutes total, 40 minutes in-water. Minimum age 6, strong swimmers preferred.

VIP Encounter (group of 2-4, $250-350 per person). Same content as Royal Swim but with a private dolphin pair, dedicated trainer, and no group rotation. The premium-experience option.

Trainer for a Day ($299-399). Six-hour behind-the-scenes program — feed prep, animal husbandry, training session participation, plus all the standard in-water interactions. Lunch included. Minimum age 14.

Sea Lion programs ($79-129). Same operator, smaller scale, encounter with California sea lions. Often bundled with a dolphin program at a discount.

Stingray Encounter ($69-89). Touch and feed program with cownose rays in a separate enclosure. Bundle option.

Dolphin Pull / Action Swim ($199-259). Combines the stingray, sea lion, and dolphin programs into a 3-hour multi-species package.

What to know before booking

Animal welfare: Dolphin Discovery is accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) and IMATA. The dolphins were bred in human care or transferred from other accredited facilities — there are no wild-capture animals in the current population. The lagoons use natural seawater filtration. Whether captive cetacean facilities should exist at all is a values question we won’t try to answer here. Travelers with strong feelings on the topic should not book; travelers who are comfortable should know that this operator is among the better-rated in the Caribbean.

Photo policy: You can’t bring your own phone or camera into the water. The on-site photographer takes photos and video of every program; packages sell at the end. Budget $40-80 for the photo package if you want any visual record of the program.

Health requirements: Programs are generally fine for healthy participants. People with open wounds, recent surgeries, or certain skin conditions are not allowed in the water. Pregnancy is fine for the encounter (platform) program but not the swim programs.

What to bring: Swimsuit, towel (provided), reef-safe sunscreen (apply before arrival; you’ll be asked to rinse off before entering the water). Skip jewelry — it can scratch the dolphins.

How to get to Dolphin Discovery from your resort

Dolphin Discovery is in Cap Cana, the gated district at the south end of the Punta Cana coast.

  • From Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana: 45 minutes south
  • From Breathless Punta Cana (Uvero Alto): 1 hour south
  • From BĂĄvaro Beach hotels: 25-35 minutes south

Round-trip transfer is typically included in program pricing for the major resort areas. Confirm pickup point when booking — Cap Cana entrance gate logistics can add 15-20 minutes to the transfer.

Booking

Direct booking through Dolphin Discovery’s website usually has the best rates. Resort concierges sell the same programs at a 10-20% markup but bundle in the transfer reliably. Beach kiosk vendors sell the programs but at higher prices and with less reliable transfer logistics — book through the resort or direct.

The 24-48 hour advance booking window applies in high season; same-day is usually fine in low season but limits your program choice.

Pick the program by what your group can handle

The Encounter (platform-based, no swimming required) works for kids 5+ and non-swimmers. The Swim Adventure adds the boogie-push and free-swim — minimum age 6 and you need to be a swimmer. The Royal Swim adds the dorsal-fin tow at speed — same minimum age but stronger swimming preferred. Don't oversell the program to kids who can't swim or who'll panic in deeper water; the Encounter is the right call for mixed-ability groups, and the photos look the same.
